EC Guayaquil Wastewater Management Project

The project development objective for the Guayaquil Wastewater Management Project for Ecuador is to increase access to improved sanitation services and to reduce wastewater pollution in selected areas of the City of Guayaquil. The proposed Project will benefit over one million residents in the southern districts of Guayaquil and riparian districts of the Estero Salado where sewer mains will be rehabilitated and new household connections will be installed and where poor households will enjoy eased conditions to get connected to the sewer network. This project is organized in four components. Component 1, installation of household connections, will provide support for the increasing of effective access to sewerage collection services within selected areas of the City of Guayaquil, through the installation and rehabilitation of household connections. Component 2, rehabilitation of sewerage network, will finance the rehabilitation of the sewerage network in La Chala basin (Suburbio Oeste area), which is riparian to the Estero Salado estuary. This component of the project aims at reducing infiltrations in the south sewerage subsystem, thus contributing to the reduction of contamination of the Estero Salado estuary from domestic wastewater. Component 3, wastewater treatment and disposal facilities, will treat 100 percent of the domestic wastewater of the southern districts of the City of Guayaquil in order to meet current environmental standards for discharges into the Guayas River. This component will finance the construction of: (i) a new wastewater treatment plant, called, to manage an average flow in dry and wet; (ii) the associated pumping and transmission facilities at Guasmo-H pumping station; (iii) pumping and transmission facilities at La Pradera pre-treatment station, and (iv) the construction of a sludge digester; and (v) the specialized independent supervision of the construction of the facilities described above.
