Opportunity Overview

Batri seeks to collaborate with Swansea to accelerate the adoption of high-performance sodium-ion (Na-ion) battery technology in the UK by validating the performance of a critical component: the advanced Prussian White (PW) cathode active material (CAM).

Na-ion batteries are a sustainable alternative to lithium-ion, relying on abundant elements and offering a path to a secure, local UK supply chain. However, their commercial deployment requires validation of material performance in industrially relevant formats, especially for demanding applications.

The aim of BriNa is to accelerate the adoption of high-performance sodium-ion battery technology in the UK. The core innovation is SU's novel PW CAM, which shows exceptional promise for use in demanding low-temperature environments (e.g., stationary storage in cold climates), a major performance gap in current batteries. This project assesses the feasibility of utilising UK-made cathode and anode materials for low-temperature battery applications. This will be done through integrating active materials into large-format prototype cells to be tested for their low-temperature performance. This feasibility study will deliver the necessary technical and economic data to justify major follow-on investment. Success will accelerate UK decarbonisation, enhance UK competitiveness by establishing a validated supply chain for high-performance Na-ion components, and deliver enhanced functionality for cold-climate applications, moving the UK closer to energy independence and Net Zero goals.
