Opportunity Overview
With the development of drag fashion and more open-minded views on gender, there are more and more
underground ballrooms in China. Previous studies, whether on queer studies, western drag fashion, or Chinese
traditional cross-dressing performances, have failed to explain the emerging drag fashion in contemporary
China. In order to sort out the forms, characteristics, and impacts of major Chinese drags and ballrooms in
recent years, and explore the gender construction, body discipline, and resistance, I will use grounded theory
to conduct this study, combined with multiple ethnographies, in-depth interviews, multimodality discourse
analysis, and semiotics analysis. This study will present the development and value of drag culture in
contemporary China to complement previous studies about Chinese queer communities and fashion
