Opportunity Overview

This is a PhD research project in Physics. Quantum key distribution enables unconditionally secure encryption of messages, however its reach is limited in terrestrial networks due to unavoidable loss of quantum light in optical fibres. A truly global quantum network can only be realised via relay satellites that connect distant metropolitan networks via optical ground stations. Heriot-Watt is part of the international science team for the Canadian QEYSSat mission, a low-earth-orbit satellite that can act as a quantum receiver and will be launched in 2023. This PhD project will be on the design, setup, and eventual field operation of a source of entangled photons that will be able to communicate to QEYSSat and a terrestrial network via an optical ground station to be deployed on an airfield near Dundee
