Opportunity Overview

Context
The Arctic is warming three to four times faster than the global average, causing the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) to melt at an alarming rate. Since 1992, the ice sheet has lost approximately 3,900 billion tons of ice, contributing 10.8 mm to global sea-level rise. Accurately predicting how this melt will continue is one of the most critical challenges in climate science, directly impacting coastal communities worldwide.
The challenge the project addresses
A major challenge is that climate models disagree profoundly on Greenland's future, with projections for melt rates varying by as much as 100%. This dangerous uncertainty stems from a critical blind spot: the complex effect of tiny atmospheric particles (aerosols) on the clouds above. Greenland’s bright, icy surface confuses traditional satellite sensors, making it extremely difficult to get the accurate measurements needed to improve the models and reduce this uncertainty.
Aims and objectives
This project aims to solve this measurement problem by developing an innovative method using artificial intelligence. Our approach has three core objectives. First, we will create a new algorithm that synergistically combines data from advanced lidar, radar, and imaging instruments on satellites. Second, using this algorithm on data from the newly launched EarthCARE mission and 17 years of historical records, we will produce the first reliable, long-term dataset of aerosol and cloud properties over Greenland. Third, we will integrate this new data into a leading climate model (MAR) to directly improve its physical processes and predictive accuracy.
Potential applications and benefits
The primary benefit will be more reliable projections of future sea-level rise, providing crucial evidence for policymakers and international bodies like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
