Opportunity Overview

Diverse teams in science are essential to solve complex problems, however the MRC funded X-NET project (www.x-net.bio) identified several challenges that hamper the career progression of biomedical data scientists, including unsupportive research environments and lack of recognition during career evaluation, that affect their progression to leadership roles. We propose to pilot and evaluate a series of initiatives designed to encourage, support and reward data scientists, to drive better collaboration across UK biomedical science and embed a supportive and sustainable culture that fully includes all data scientists. We will:

Map best practices in biomedical data science career support across UK research institutions and the life sciences industry.
Formulate and promote a 'Code of Conduct' for interdisciplinary research projects involving biomedical data science.
Pilot and evaluate a peer mentoring network for biomedical data scientists across the UK.
Conduct a feasibility study into 'Agility' fellowships to accelerate personal development and enable interactions between disciplines and sectors.
Signpost professional development training resources that will aid communication across biomedical disciplines and build leadership skills.
Trial and evaluate networking and development opportunities for biomedical data scientists including a hackathon and a career development workshop for with biomedical and STEM researchers.
We will use online surveys, interviews, and workshops to engage biomedical researchers from all career levels in academia and industry, research support professionals, academic leadership, and funders to identify which initiatives positively impact:

Communication and collaboration between data scientists and the wider biomedical community to improve and normalise a collaborative rather than competitive scientific culture.
Support the development of leadership and professional skills of data scientists.
