Medical imaging using on-chip THz waveguides

The project will develop new imaging modalities for medical imaging using THz light to include both free space and guided wave systems. Specifically, resonant on-chip THz circuits will be developed for scanned imaging in which contrast will appear caused by differences in THz permittivity between cancerous and non-cancerous tissue. We will also investigate the use of commercial THz cameras in developing simple THz imaging systems for use in imaging / mapping a surgical scene. Tissue phantoms will be developed to act as a stand in for the surgical environment in the first instance, while the eventual goal is incorporation of the chips/ imaging system into an existing endoscopic probe. Experimental work will be validated and understood with the aid of full 3D modelling performed using commercial high frequency software (including HFSS).

The work will link in with an ongoing EPSRC Programme Grant in this area.
