Opportunity Overview

Literary fiction and the medical humanities have both experienced a recent surge of interest in the 'mental health novel', but Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is underrepresented within this field. My practice-based project breaks new ground by interrogating understandings of the interplay between place, history and OCD. The creative component is an experimental novel charting a journey into the condition's extremities and exploring the role of collective dissent in rebuilding identity. The critical thesis explores cultures of resistance against OCD symptoms and treatment in the archives and present practice of the Retreat facility (York).
