Opportunity Overview

This project aims to create a novel photonic system that can control and manipulate the behaviour of organ-on-a-chip models using optogenetics. The system will use hydrogel optical fibres that are resistant to fatigue and can deliver light stimuli to specific cells or tissues. The system will apply data analysis for the signals from the optical fibres and adjust the light inputs accordingly. The platform will be experimented on heart/cardiomyocyte and lung-on-a-chip models and will be able to simulate physiological and pathological conditions with high accuracy and precision. This will enable new discoveries in cellular and tissue-level dynamics and will enhance drug development and personalised medicine. The project will involve the integration of various photonic components, such as photodetectors, cameras, optical modulators, couplers, splitters, and spectrometers, as well as the development and validation of a computational model.
