Opportunity Overview

This proposed research offers a new perspective on the experiences of refugees from Arab states in Scotland to understand their perceptions of their national identity in relation to their interaction with Refugee Third Sector Organisations (RTSOs). This is particularly significant now, given the ongoing public debate around Scottish and British national identities. Data for this research will be gathered through interviews and focus groups with refugees, and analysis of publications from RTSOs, as well as government documents.

RTSOs have a political as well as social role in the refugee's life, as they have their own positions on national identity which informs the way they deal with refugees. Many migrants interact with refugee organisations as part of their 'integration'. The organisations' activities are important since their role is to manage migrants' relationship with their host country. This study aims to examine refugee national identity, which will be impacted due to their interaction with RTSOs.

This project has unique relevance and impact in several areas. Firstly, it will contribute to the academic discussion on nationality and migration in Scotland. It will also inform government and affiliated institutions seeking to adopt culturally appropriate/inclusive policy regarding Arab communities. Lastly, it will also deepen the public's understanding of Arab refugees' perception of Scotland and its people.
