Opportunity Overview

This PhD brings together expertise in the physical (engineering) and biological sciences and, will investigate polymicrobial interactions and biofilm responses to epoxy-tigliane antimicrobial treatment. Using state-of-the-art cell-imaging technologies at Swansea and Cardiff Universities (including confocal laser scanning and atomic force microscopies; CLSM/AFM) this project will study (at a mechanobiological level) the interaction of epoxy-tiglianes with the bacterial cell surface and biofilm extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) matrix. Working at the interface of the engineering and life sciences, the successful student will acquire expertise in biofilm microbiology, biomechanics & in vitro modelling, cell imaging/labelling, and experience in research translation and industrial collaboration.
