Atomic structure and collisional models form the basis of how we interpret the spectra from a variety of plasmas whether they be magnetically confined (fusion) or astrophysical plasmas.
These models provide a predictive capability for those carrying out fusion experiments or taking spectral measurements through astrophysical observation. Basic fundamental research such reveals the identity of elements within a plasma and may be used to determine its characteristics such as temperature and density.
