Opportunity Overview

The objective of the Second Phase of Green and Resilient Expansion of Energy Program Project for Kenya is to increase the capacity of Kenya Power System for energy trade and renewable energy integration. There are four components to the project, the first component being installation of system stabilization equipment. This component will finance installation of STATCOMs to improve the fault levels, increase voltage stability, and allow for greater import of cheaper and renewable energy from Ethiopia. One of the STATCOMs will be installed at the existing Suswa substation where the 500 HVDC Ethiopia-Kenya transmission interconnector terminates while the second STATCOM will be installed at 220/132kV Rabai substation at the coast region of Kenya. The second component is the construction of a 400kV Substation at Kimuka. The Kimuka substation will enable export of power from Ethiopia to Tanzania through Kenya by allowing the Suswa-Isinya line to be operated at full design capacity. The third component is the battery energy storage systems. Implemented by KenGen, the component will support the installation of the first BESS of up to 200MWh for load shifting renewable energy sources (primarily geothermal) but also grid stability by providing system reserves (both fast and backup reserves). The charging will occur during the off-peak period (between 10pm and 5am), while the provision of backup reserves peaks during the morning and evening hours (at 4am and 6pm). Finally, the fourth component is the technical assistance, capacity building and project management. This component includes five subcomponents: The solar auctions preparatory studies, The transaction advisory for solar auction (including legal and procurement), sector technical assistance, capacity building and project management, technical assistance to KETRACO, and technical assistance to KenGen.
