The development objective of the Atoll Education Development Project for Maldives is to enhance access to, and quality of, secondary education. The project comprises of five components. The first component, enhancing curriculum delivery and increasing participation in higher secondary education objective is to promote strategic initiatives at the country level to strengthen and develop the general education system with a special focus on secondary grades. It consists of following sub-components: (i) improving learning in strategic subjects in secondary education grades; and (ii) promoting participation of boys in higher secondary education. The second component, continuing teacher development will assist Government of Maldives (GoM) to implement a program of continuing teacher development. It consists of following sub-components: (i) improving the delivery of teaching and learning; and (ii) school-based professional development of teachers. The third component, measuring and enhancing school and system performance will assist GoM to measure the performance of the school system through quality assurance activities and national assessments of learning outcomes. It consists of following sub-components: (i) modernizing quality assurance for school improvement; (ii) national assessments of learning outcomes for policy and program development; and (iii) school-based learning enhancement grants. The fourth component, coordination, monitoring, capacity building, and technical assistance will help the Ministry of Education (MoE) to coordinate and monitor project activities, as well as provide technical assistance and knowledge support to the MoE agencies and to schools.
