The development objective of the Railway Improvement and Safety Project for Egypt is to improve safety and service quality of the railway services along the Alexandria-Cairo-Nag Hammadi corridor. The project comprises of three components. The first component is safe system signaling modernization. It consists of following sub-components: (i) upgrading of the railway signaling system along the Cairo-Giza-Beni Suef line; (ii) completion of upgrades of the railway signaling system along the Cairo-Alexandria line; and (iii) completion of track upgrades at priority stations for the safe functioning of the upgraded railway signaling system along the Alexandria-Arab El Raml; Beni Suef-Asyut; and Asyut-Nag Hammadi lines commenced under the Egypt National Railways Restructuring Project (ENRRP). The second component is safe system asset management improvement. It consists of following sub-components: (i) carrying out of the following safety improvement works at stations, tracks, crossroads, and on locomotives; and (ii) implementing priority activities under the stakeholder engagement plan with a view to strengthening stakeholder engagement, such as the establishment and operationalization of user committees along the railway lines and development of a citizen’s charter. The third component is project delivery, institutional, and human resource development. It consists of following sub-components: (i) implementing the following project-delivery activities; and (ii) supporting institutional development of the railway sector.
