The objective of the Urban Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Services Program Multiphase Programmatic Approach (MPA) Including first phase loan for the Second Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project is to provide safely managed WASH services in urban areas in Pakistan. There are four components to the project, the first component being capacity building and reform of KWSC. This component will finance capacity building and reform support activities to enable KWSC’s evolution into a well-functioning utility resilient to climate change. The second component is the safely managed water supply and sanitation services. This component includes seven subcomponents: provision of safely managed drinking water and sanitation services in selected unplanned settlements (katchi Abadis), priority sewer network rehabilitation and expansion, priority water distribution network rehabilitation and expansion, improvement of energy efficiency, K-IV Augmentation, rehabilitation and reconstruction of existing water treatment plants, and construction of Malir basin wastewater interceptor, wastewater treatment, recycling plant, and new recycled water distribution network. The third component is the project management and studies. This component finances (i) project management and coordination, including design review and construction supervision, project management support, E&S risk management, and project results monitoring and evaluation, as well as beneficiary surveys and the Project’s impact evaluation. Finally, the fourth component is the contingent emergency response component.
