Sustainable Development DPL

The Development Policy Loan (DPL), in the amount of US 400 million dollars, is to support the Government of the Dominican Republic (GoDR) to reduce pollution and strengthen institutional and financing capacity for natural resource protection. Specific policy reforms under the first pillar Reduce Pollution include those that address the rising challenge of marine and riverine pollution, and contamination and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Policy reforms under the second pillar Strengthen Institutional and Financing Capacity for Natural Resource Protection include those that improve the ability of the government to respond to the sargassum seaweed crisis, better manage dredging and earth removal, and provide a robust framework for sustainable development bonds. The reform program will help protect coastal ecosystems and inland water bodies, reduce emissions, and increase financing capacity to support environmental conservation, climate resilience and a low carbon transition, all of which will help advance the country’s ability to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and long-term climate goals. The operation supports the Dominican Republic’s (DR) sustainable development over the long term by fostering crucial policy and institutional reforms that enhance the country’s management of natural resources and ability to respond to climate change.
