Een verplichting the AWV heeft zijn rol als tunnelbeheerder van een aantal TEN-V tunnels op haar grondgebied en die voortvloeit uit de Europese richtlijn 2004/54/EG van 29 april 2004 inzake minimum veiligheidseisen voor tunnels in het trans-Europese vervoersnetwerk. In uitbreiding hierop heeft AWV zichzelf opgelegd om ook een tunnelveiligheidsbeambte aan te stellen voor alle overige wegtunnels op haar grondgebied.
