Background: The municipality of Ittigen planned the development of the central "Rain Center" area, which had existed since the 1970s and was originally designed for 20,000 inhabitants. A master plan from 2013 focused on improving the outdoor spaces, and some measures have already been implemented. In 2020, a new kindergarten was built, and the municipal council decided to create a pedestrian zone instead of a parking lot. Due to their poor condition, the renovation of the triple gymnasium and the multi-purpose building was abandoned in favor of new construction. A comprehensive "Rain" master plan was subsequently developed to ensure optimal long-term use of the area. To this end, a single-stage project competition was held for the construction of new sports and leisure facilities, seeking innovative and sustainable concepts. The winning project by LEISMANN AG now serves as the basis for further planning and implementation. Objectives: The complex in Ittigen is situated on a terraced plateau and is characterized by loosely distributed, freestanding buildings and a fragmented avenue. To strengthen the main square, a two-story building was integrated as a new central point, incorporated into the existing triple gymnasium. An arcade on the west side marks the entrance to the new center and creates a welcoming atmosphere. The buildings were arranged to maintain the permeability of the campus and promote connections between the sports fields and the central square. The facade design reflects the concept of stacking and joining, with exposed concrete columns and wooden facade elements. Alternating window shapes enliven the facades and soften the architectural expression. The surrounding area was enhanced with rows of trees and new pedestrian connections to establish Rain Square as a central meeting place.
