Opportunity Overview

With the MehrSpur Zürich – Winterthur project, the Swiss Federal Government and the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) are planning a new double-track line through the Brütten Tunnel and the expansion of the Dietlikon, Bassersdorf, Wallisellen, and Winterthur Töss stations. This will eliminate the current bottleneck in the rail network between Zurich and Winterthur and allow for the necessary expansion of services. The centerpiece for resolving the capacity bottleneck between Zurich and Winterthur is the approximately 8.3 km long Brütten Tunnel, which includes a roughly 1 km long branch line towards the airport. For this underground double-track expansion, a single-track tunnel with an inner diameter of approximately 8.3 m will be constructed in each direction. One tunnel entrance is located north of Dietlikon station, and a second east of Bassersdorf station. These two tunnel entrances will merge underground at the Mülberg junction and emerge at Tössmühle, just before Winterthur, at a portal structure that crosses the Kempt River. The two single-track tunnels are connected by a total of 20 cross-passages at intervals of no more than 500 meters. In the event of an incident, these cross-passages allow passengers to escape from the affected tunnel to the opposite tunnel. At the three lowest points, the cross-passages are also combined with railway infrastructure buildings, which have access from ground level.
