The Karlsruhe municipal wastewater treatment plant is located in the Knielingen district, at An der Wässerung 2, 76187 Karlsruhe. In addition to wastewater treatment, two sewage sludge incineration lines are also operated there. The sewage sludge generated at the Karlsruhe wastewater treatment plant is thermally treated in these two incineration lines. Incineration line 2 was recently upgraded. The control technology for incineration line 1 still consists of Siemens Simatic S5 programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which have been discontinued since 2003. The modernization of the control and automation technology is therefore crucial for the continued operational safety of the plant, as spare parts for the discontinued Siemens S5 system are difficult to obtain and the control technology of line 1 is outdated. The replacement of the control equipment and the adaptation of the measurement technology aim to bring the control technology and operation of both incineration plants up to the same standard. It is necessary to replace the old S5 controllers with S7 controllers to bring the incineration plant up to current technological standards and integrate it into the wastewater treatment plant's control system.
