The town of Wurzen is a large district town in the northeast of the Leipzig district, located about 30 km east of Leipzig in the Leipzig Lowland Basin. Wurzen boasts a history spanning over 900 years, having been first mentioned in 961. The town lies on the eastern high bank of the Mulde River. Wurzen is an important economic center with several medium-sized companies. A key economic focus is the production of confectionery and baked goods at a branch of a large, internationally operating company. Wurzen consists of the town center and several districts, which were incorporated up to 2006. Burkartshain is one of the two largest districts. It was first documented in 1284. Since 1952, Burkartshain has belonged to the Wurzen district and was merged with the municipality of Kühren on January 1, 1994. Effective October 1, 2006, the municipality of Kühren-Burkartshain was incorporated into Wurzen. The Burkartshain district has approximately 600 inhabitants. It features a daycare center, an outdoor swimming pool, and a school for students with learning difficulties. The city of Wurzen is now planning to construct a new fire station in the Burkartshain district. During the preliminary planning phase, a preferred design was developed and pursued. This design envisions a two-story, solid structure with a social and changing area, reminiscent of an industrial building, and an adjacent, lightweight vehicle bay.
