In the support provided to employable benefit recipients, it has become apparent that multiple barriers to employment arise and become entrenched as unemployment progresses. These include psychosocial factors such as health impairments, a lack of individual coping skills, and limited social resources. As a consequence, many individuals experience withdrawal and isolation from social life, a breakdown of familiar daily routines, a reluctance to engage, atypical social behavior, lack of motivation, and physical and mental health problems. To reintegrate employable benefit recipients into the workforce in the long term, it is essential to first reduce or eliminate these existing problems, as they obstruct their focus on the labor market. Intensive, individualized case management and support aim to help these benefit recipients overcome their personal difficulties, provide assistance in managing their personal and social challenges, and thereby regain their willingness to participate in further (qualifying) measures or to take up employment. Outreach social work aims to establish a binding working alliance with participants who face significant individual challenges.
