At the end of 2023, KNO AG defined measures in a restructuring plan for its individual locations to ensure continued local healthcare and nursing care through further development, particularly of the smaller hospitals in rural areas. The plan also incorporated the findings of a "Healthcare Atlas" for the Upper Palatinate region. The regional report identifies increasing needs in the field of geriatric medicine and an emerging gap in outpatient care. The restructuring plan proposes the following structural optimizations for the smaller hospital in Tirschenreuth and the rehabilitation clinic in Erbendorf: • Closure of the Erbendorf location and relocation of the rehabilitation facility to Tirschenreuth • Transformation of the Tirschenreuth location into a clinic focusing on internal medicine with an emphasis on acute geriatrics and geriatric rehabilitation, as well as a center for outpatient surgery. The core buildings at the Tirschenreuth location were constructed in 1952-53. Since then, there have been continuous additions and renovations. The final construction phase, completed by 2022, included the expansion of the operating theater and emergency room, along with fire safety upgrades. As part of the planned relocation of the geriatric rehabilitation unit from Erbendorf to Tirschenreuth, renovations and refurbishments will be required in two consecutive phases in the east and west wings. These renovations will, in some cases, involve a change of use under building regulations. Both sections of the building, up to and including the second floor, will be used for inpatient areas. The goal of the renovation and upgrades is to facilitate the transfer of at least 80 beds for geriatric rehabilitation from the Steinwald Clinic in Erbendorf and to maintain at least 40 internal medicine beds, with the aim of creating a specialized internal medicine clinic with a focus on acute geriatric care.
