In this research area, software for desktops, mobile devices, and the cloud will be considered. The software should run on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware found in cloud desktop computers and typically require processors with medium to high performance. Examples of these are chips with multiple cores and a clock frequency > 2000 MHz, which also support the most demanding applications such as complex AI models. The focus of research in this lot is primarily on the software-level, meaning that countermeasures in software to side-channel attacks on implementations are to be investigated, with limiting hardware capacities playing only a subordinate role. The developed demonstrator hence is a software implementation in this lot. | IoT devices and embedded systems rely on processors with low to medium performance in order to operate energy-efficiently. The object of investigation here is a processor that offers sufficient performance for sensors, actuators or smart applications with low power consumption. This means that countermeasures to side-channel attacks on implementations are to be investigated, whereby limiting hardware capacities play a medium to large role. The research focus is not only on software level but also on hardware level. The demonstrator developed at the end of the project is a complete system consisting of software and hardware. | Smart cards (also known as integrated circuit cards, ICCs) use extremely energy-efficient and specialized microcontrollers with very low computing power. Typical processors or 8-bit controllers, optimized for cryptographic functions, run at very low clock frequencies < 100 MHz. ID cards and bank cards according to the international standard ISO 7816 belong to this category. In this lot, countermeasures to side-channel attacks on implementations are to be investigated, whereby limiting hardware capacities play a large to very large role. The research focus is on both the software and the hardware side....
