The DLR Institute of Maritime Energy Systems (MS) is building a land-based test infrastructure consisting of thermal and electrical systems to test newly developed energy systems. This necessitates a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbed to reduce the number of test sites and thus minimize the operating and maintenance costs of the physical infrastructure. Furthermore, HIL concepts offer maximum flexibility during the validation and testing phases. Power HIL systems, in particular, enable realistic simulation with real-time simulators (RTs) and power amplifiers (PAs). Within DLR MS, the following research activities are planned in the area of power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) systems: The energy management system will first be validated in an offline simulation environment, followed by testing in a PHIL setup. In the PHIL setup, some of the system models will be replaced by power amplifiers to simulate realistic conditions for validating the developed power/energy management systems. - Testing of the SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) module: The DLR MS will test the SOFC module in a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment to experimentally demonstrate its dynamic operation within the ship's overall energy system. The hardware includes the SOFC system, the battery, and thermal loads, while other energy sources and sinks can be emulated by power amplifiers (PAs). - Testing of the power electronics: Control algorithms for the power electronics, such as variable frequency drives (VFDs), inverters, etc., will be tested in a virtual environment. Furthermore, the power electronics hardware will be verified using power HIL under various operating conditions.
