The investment objective consists of: 1. Restoration and renaturation of an old bifurcation arm towards the Bala arm, which would create the premises and conditions for both navigation (as an alternative navigation option for the Old Danube, in limited cases with very low Danube flows) and for the upstream/downstream migration of sturgeons, which also includes: - 1.a. relocation of the bifurcation area further upstream from the current location (approx. at km 347) and modification of the bifurcation angle to avoid the influence of the Pârjoaia rock on the direction of the water currents that direct the water flow towards the Bala arm; - 1.b. for environmental protection: creation of a natural protection of the restored/renatured arm bed to limit erosion and its evolution over time (limitation of morphological changes at the bifurcation level); - 1.c. for environmental protection: creating a roughness of the restored branch that will ensure increased resistance to water flow, which will lead to the redistribution of flow at the bifurcation level in favor of increasing flow on the Old Danube and generating a flow speed on the branch that is compatible with the migration capacity of aquatic fauna (especially sturgeons) and with navigation; 2. Raising the level of the existing bottom threshold on the Bala branch from 0 m MNC to 6.5 m MNC in order to generate the flow resistance necessary to divert waters to the Old Danube; 3. Dredging in the navigable channel on the Danube between km 345+500 and km 343; 4. Navigation safety works on the restored/renatured branch.
