Opportunity Overview

The development objective of the Transport Corridors for Economic Resilience Project for Zambia is to improve efficiency, connectivity and climate resilience of key regional transport and trade corridors in Eastern and Southern Africa. The project comprises of four components. The first component, resilient transport and trade facilitation systems along the Dar es Salaam corridor and preparatory studies for ensuing corridors under the Series of Projects (SOP) consists of following sub-components: (i) development of climate resilient road sections along the Dar es Salaam corridor; (ii) development of the Nakonde one stop border post (OSBP); (iii) development of the safety, mobility, automated, real-time traffic management (SMART) corridor concept on the Lusaka-Nakonde section of the Dar es Salaam corridor; and (iv) preparatory studies for road sections along key regional corridors. The second component, corridor-oriented development consists of following sub-components: (i) assessment of socio-economic development opportunities along the Dar es Salaam corridor; and (ii) development of identified micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) businesses for regional exports. The third component, sectoral capacity development and project management consists of following sub-components: (i) support to regional corridors management; (ii) development of a railway strategy for Zambia including an action plan for enhancing the institutional set-up, operational efficiency, and financial sustainability of Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL); (iii) studies and sectoral capacity building activities; and (iv) project management for the entire project, monitoring and evaluation. The fourth component, contingent emergency response component (CERC) is designed to provide swift response in the event of an eligible crisis or emergency, by enabling Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) to request the World Bank to reallocate project funds to support emergency response and reconstruction,...
