Zanzibar Energy Sector Transformation and Access Project

The development objectives of Zanzibar Energy Sector Transformation and Access Project for Tanzania are to expand access to reliable and efficient electricity services and to scale up renewable energy generation in Zanzibar. The proposed project is structured in three components. 1) The first component, Renewable Energy and Storage Infrastructure Development, has the following sub-components: (i) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for Grid Support; (ii) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Plant; and (iii) Technical Assistance for Renewable Energy Development. 2) The second component, Grid modernization and access scale-up, has the following sub-components: (i) 132kV Backbone Transmission Infrastructure; (ii) Distribution Network Strengthening and Access Scale-up; and (iii) Installation of a SCADA System. 3) The third component, Sector Institutional Strengthening and Project Implementation Support, has the following sub-components: (i) Technical Assistance and Project Implementation Support to ZECO; (ii) Technical Assistance and Project Implementation Support to MoWEM; (iii) Energy Efficiency Improvements; and (iv) Closing the Gender Gap in the Energy Sector.
