Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-selected spectroscopy (EDS) and/or electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) is commonly used for characterizing corrosion/oxidation products and studying microstructures. Metallographic preparation by mechanical polishing, with or without chemical or electrochemical etching, is essential for characterizing the surface of samples. In the case of molten corrosion (salts or metals), the corrosion products are water-soluble, and conventional lubricants cannot be used. When dealing with very thin oxide layers, the mechanical stresses generated by polishing can lead to damage. Chemical or electrochemical etching can result in selective dissolution of the sample. The use of an ion polisher eliminates these preparation artifacts.
