Why after-sales coverage decides these awards more often than price

Agricultural machinery is bought to be used a long way from a workshop, in a season that does not wait. That turns after-sales support into the dominant evaluation criterion in most of these competitions. Buyers ask for the location of dealer or service points relative to where the equipment will operate, guaranteed response times in the working season, the stock of fast-moving spares held in country, and a commitment to parts availability for a stated number of years. A machine that is cheaper and unsupported is scored as what it is: an asset that will stop and stay stopped.

Specification is written in performance terms rather than by model -- power output, implement compatibility and hitch category, working width, tank or hopper capacity, ground clearance, fuel consumption -- because the buyer wants competing manufacturers to be able to answer. Where the equipment is for smallholder or cooperative use, the specification frequently favours simplicity and field repairability over sophistication, and bidders who offer the most advanced machine can lose to one that a village mechanic can maintain.

Two practical requirements decide delivery. Operator and maintenance training, delivered in the working language with manuals to match, is normally a priced obligation rather than a courtesy, and acceptance can depend on it. And field demonstration is a real evaluation stage: buyers commonly require shortlisted machines to be demonstrated under local soil and crop conditions, which excludes bidders who cannot get a machine into the country for a trial. Delivery terms to rural destinations, including offloading at sites without handling equipment, belong in the price rather than in a later claim.
