How laboratory instruments are specified, and where single-source disputes start
Laboratory equipment is specified by performance rather than by description. A well-drafted tender states detection limits, precision, throughput, operating range and the methods the instrument must be capable of running, and lets any instrument that meets them compete. A poorly drafted one lists the features of a particular manufacturer's model, which is the most frequent ground of challenge in this category: a specification that only one product can satisfy is a single-source award wearing the clothes of a competition, and buyers are increasingly required to justify it in writing.
Acceptance is a defined process, not a delivery note. Instruments are normally required to pass installation, operational and performance qualification at the buyer's site before payment, witnessed and documented, with calibration traceable to recognised standards. Where the laboratory works to an accreditation standard, the supplier inherits obligations from it -- traceable calibration certificates, documented maintenance, and method validation support. Bidders who price delivery and not qualification lose the difference.
The commercial trap is the consumable and the service contract. Columns, reagents, cartridges, gases and proprietary software licences can exceed the instrument price within a few years, and preventive maintenance visits, engineer response times and guaranteed uptime are priced separately once the warranty ends. Buyers who evaluate on instrument price alone tend to return to the market for the same instrument's running costs shortly afterwards, which is why whole-life models and committed price lists for consumables are now common bid requirements.
This section describes how this category is bought generally, across the public buyers that publish it. The figures elsewhere on this page are measured for this market alone.

How long do bidders get to respond to laboratory equipment tenders in Belgium?
Across the 236 Belgium laboratory equipment notices that publish both a publication date and a closing date, the median response window is 36 days. A quarter of them allowed 33 days or fewer and a quarter stayed open for more than 44. Not one of them closed within a fortnight of being published, so the window on this market is consistently workable.
How often are laboratory equipment tenders published in Belgium?
Belgium publishes about 4 notices a month in this category, 46 in the last twelve months. That is 72% fewer than the 162 published in the twelve months before that. Over the last three years there were 336, spread across 60 separate months of activity since 25 May 2021. July is historically the busiest month. No new notice has been published in this category since 26 May 2026, 128 days ago, so treat the figures above as a record of the market rather than as this week's pipeline.
How does Belgium compare with other laboratory equipment markets?
Among the 42 countries where GlobalGov holds a comparable laboratory equipment market, Belgium ranks 13th by number of records. The largest is Poland (3,493 records against 713 here). Within Belgium itself, laboratory equipment is the 15th largest of the 65 procurement categories tracked here.
Where do the Belgium laboratory equipment records on this page come from?
