Protection only exists if the item fits the wearer. Respiratory protection requires face fit testing for each individual and each model, which the contract normally obliges the supplier to provide or support; harnesses, gloves, footwear and eye protection require a size and shape range that covers the actual workforce rather than a nominal average. Equipment designed only around one body type has been a persistent failure in this category, and tenders increasingly require evidence of a range that fits everyone who must wear it.
Lifecycle obligations are contractual. Shelf life and manufacture dates matter because protective materials degrade in storage; inspection regimes and recorded examination apply to fall protection and other critical equipment; and training in correct use, donning and doffing is usually a priced deliverable. Buyers also specify compatibility, because a helmet, hearing defender, eye protection and respirator worn together must work together, and an item certified alone can invalidate the protection of another when combined.
